Match Report from Dave Vallender Honiton U13s vs Exeter Athletic
Honiton U13s made the short trip to Exeter Athletic, giving debuts to three new team members. What followed was a real game of four quarters, full of lessons, character, and some brilliant rugby.
Honiton started strongly, showing great teamwork, confident handling and powerful running. The defence was solid and, despite a few frustrating calls, the boys kept their composure to take a well-deserved 3–1 lead after the first quarter.
Momentum shifted in the second quarter after a disallowed try. Frustration crept in, and the team lost a bit of focus. The pods broke down, passes started going astray, and Exeter took advantage to score several tries. Things didn’t improve in the third quarter as confidence dipped further and teamwork faltered, allowing Exeter to score more unanswered tries.
But the final quarter showed what this Honiton side is really made of. The players regrouped, channelled their energy in the right way, and completely turned the game around. Huge tackles, quick rucks and strong carries stopped Exeter in their tracks, and Honiton’s passing and support play came to life. They dominated the closing stages, scoring a string of great tries, including a stunning team effort that began on their own 5-metre line, with Wilson and Thomas punching holes through the defence before slick handling saw the ball moved wide for a superb finish.
Every player should be proud of their effort and attitude! The short break and new faces meant teamwork took time to click, but the comeback showed just how impressive this group can be when they find their rhythm. There was power running from Wilson and Jack, sharp handling from Sam F. and Charlie, and fierce defensive work led by Thomas.
Player of the Match: Sam W for outstanding debut with excellent tackling and rucking.
Runner-Up: Ben for strong first performance at prop.
Special Mention: Noah O for an impressive debut at hooker.
A few technical areas, particularly scrummaging, will be a focus in training this week, but if Honiton play like they did in the first and final quarters, they’ll be a real handful for Topsham next weekend!
