U12's First match of 2016

Nick Goodman18 Jan 2016 - 21:44

With Christmas cobwebs cleared away, Honiton started the new year as spritely as they finished 2015.

Honiton RFC U12s travelled to Wellington for their first match in a month, and first match of 2016. Despite the cobwebs, it was the Lacelads who started the brightest as they dominated territory and possession. However they faced a stubborn home defence, which refused to yield against a barrage of Honiton attacks, until Arthur Hattan powered over after a couple of strong hand offs. With the lead, Honiton again seized possession but a loose pass enabled Wellington to score a break away try, to level the scores. Despite the setback Honiton, remained positive, keeping ball in hand with forwards and backs linking well. This platform once again, saw Hattan power over, before captain Gabriel Cortinhas swatted several Wellington defenders aside to score. With a two try cushion Honiton pushed hard for another score, but it was the home side who struck next, as they once again absorbed numerous Lacelads attacks, before breaking away for their second try of the match. With the game in a balance, it was Honiton who grabbed the next score, after a powerful forward drive saw flanker Isaac Stanbury emerge from the bottom of a maul with the ball in hand over the Wellington try line, before Wellington scored with the final play of the half, and it was 20:15 at the break.

With the game finally balanced, the next score was always going to critical. Once again Honiton pinned the hosts back, but the Wellington defence remained steadfast until some quick thinking from scrum half Joe Evans, and hooker Osian Owen saw the latter score from a quick tap. This score was quickly followed by one from Joe Evans, before the rampaging Yannick Barrett opened his legs to score. With the Wellington defence tiring, Honiton took full advantage, and Gabriel Cortinhas once again charged through to score a quite brilliant try, and his second. This score was followed by a Lee Pullman try, after he combined well with the imposing Joshua Giles. The final say went to Joe Evans, who collected an Osian Owen pass, after a fantastic break from the dangerous Billy Tarr to cap an impressive Lacelads performance, as they ran out victors, by 50 points to 15. After such a commanding team performance it is always hard to single anyone out. However, it was number eight, and captain Gabriel Cortinhas who took the man of the match honours, for his complete back row performance.
