Even torrential rain can't stop the Ton

Even torrential rain can't stop the Ton

Alan Freemantle24 Sep 2018 - 11:08

Honiton crush Hayle in a one sided affair that finishes 10 minutes early.

--Honiton resumed league action on Saturday with a visit from struggling Hayle. With a corporate lunch booked by one of the club sponsors Jewson’s and the twos at the fortress as well, there was a large crowd down at the Ton and this despite the torrential rain.

For Hayle it was a bit of a rush job to get on the field, as traffic problems saw them arrive late. To allow them time to prepare the kick of time was put back ten minutes.

For Honiton there were a few positional changes from the last outing and there was also a first team debut for Mike Boraston who replaced the injured Pricey at hooker.
Honiton elected to play up the hill in the first half and in very blustery and wet condition they were quickly in the driving seat when Ollie Cave crossed for a try. He added to this when he again brushed through some weak defence and with ten minutes gone Honiton were in the driving seat. Player coach Hannay got the next score after a good break from Josh Rice, he fed back row partner Harry Wright and with good hands from James Coutes this allowed space for Hannay to crash over after fending of several would be tacklers. Webber got his first conversion in what were difficult kicking conditions all round. The scores kept coming and Hannay got his second from a catch and drive line out and a barge over. Webber converted and with a half time lead of 24-0 the game was really already in the bag.

Still in difficult handling condition Honiton now had use of the Allhallows slope and really they cut lose in the half. Wright crossed early on in Club house corner. Dominic Hawke cantered in for the second of the half, from outside the twenty two. Webber added the extras. The game was disrupted for 5 minutes for a an injury to one of the Hayle players but the restart saw no respite for the Cornish visitors as Will Tyers ran in from 30 metres out for a converted try. Hannay got his hatrick after again forcing his way over under the posts. Johnny House got the next after a good Cave break and Will Tyers got his brace after a great line break and feed from Alex Brooks.

With 10 minutes still to go, the rain chucking it down and Hayle on the ropes and out for the count, all agreed to cut the game short and with a score line of 62-0 it was really a demolition job already

Honiton now have maximum points from their first three outings and once again it was a great all round team performance. Ben Webber was awarded the man of the match award.

Fett need to be back on the ground as next week the stakes are bigger as the Ton go to much stiffer opposition Withycombe and they will be to trying to avenge their cup defeat at the end of last season.
