Honiton v Bideford
Sponsors Blamphayne sawmills had their lunch at the Allhallows in atrocious weather conditions.
It was the home side who opened the scoring through Rhys Phillips who scored under the posts try converted by Johnny House seven nil.
A few minutes later, Bideford equalised with a try of their own just left of the posts off good work by their forwards. The try was converted to bring the score level at seven points each.
Bideford quickly got their second try when the ball was spun out wide from a quick tap penalty, the conversion went wide 7-12.
Johnny House reduced the deficit to 2 points with a penalty. 10-12
With the weather showing no signs of improvement it was testimony to both sides that they both contributed to play expansive rugby.
Bideford enjoyed more possession than Honiton but could not use this to increase their lead. At halftime the score remained at 10-12.
The second half started in much the same manners as the first ended, Bideford enjoyed the lions share of possession. The home defence showed its typical tenacity and thwarted early attempts to get the all over the line.
Finally Honiton had some sustained possession and made good use of with a period of pressure on the Bideford line. Rhys Phillips broke the scoring deadlock with his second try of the game breaking through the Bideford back line. The try was converted by Johnny House 17-12.
Honiton were continuing to make progress and were awarded a penalty for offside , some back chat saw the ref move them another ten metres. This gave Johnny House an easier shot at goal, slotted the kick moving the score on 20-12.
Some astute kicking from Johnny House kept Bideford pegged back in their twenty two as the clock was running down to full time. The forwards got in on the act and won a scrum against the head. This was followed by a penalty for a high tackle but unfortunately the forwards lost the ball in the driving maul. The Ton continued to hold firm and prevented any hope of a comeback from the north Devon side and gave reward to the hardy crowd who turned up to watch.
Next week sees the Ton travel to Exeter Saracens.
