Topsham II 0 V 46 Honiton
Honiton arrived high in confidence for this potential banana skin but there was no need to worry as Honiton took lead after only four minutes with Jonny House breaking away to score a try which he then converted 0-7 Honiton.
Honiton were well in control and after fifteen minutes Ben Spence received the ball about ten meters out, saw a gap in the defence and forced hi way through it for a try. Converted by Jonny House.
After the kickoff Topsham had a little bit of possession but they couldn’t make it count and when they inevitably lost the ball some slick handling by the forwards and backs allowed Jack Madge to score the first of his two tries.
After 30 minutes, the impressive Laird Crevald had to leave the pitch and to be replaced by new signing Nathan Hannay, making a welcome return to the team.
Suddenly our scrum became dominant and in the loose Honiton’s hard running and carrying the ball into contact at speed were causing Topsham to lose players to injury at an alarming rate. A serious injury (dislocated ankle, they’re physio told me)to a Topsham player caused a long delay and as Topsham didn’t have a stretcher the poor bloke had to be carried off, in great pain, by two players.
The game was fairly even at this point with mistakes and penalties for both sides but Honiton were always in control.
from a line out close to the five meter line Honiton set up a rolling maul, the maul crossed the line and Jack Madge at the back got the ball down for his second try of the match.
Halftime 0-24 Honiton.
Straight from the kickoff, an amazing run by Charlie Wright from the ten meter line saw him cross the line for another Honiton try. 0-29 Honiton.
It was Topsham’s turn to apply a little pressure now and they had the ball in Honiton’s half for good 5 to 10 minutes. However Honiton we’re awarded a scrum which we dominated, to be fair Topsham were down to twelve men now, had a winger playing in the front row and didn’t have a number 8,
After the scrum Nathan Hannay received a ball on the 10 meter line, sprinted like a gazelle, evading at least one defender and strolled over the line for a brilliant try. Converted by Jonny House. 0-36 Honiton
It’s Fin Lowman‘s turn now to get on the scoresheet. In mid field Ben Kidson made a terrific break through the Topsham defence, when he was eventually tackled he managed to pop the ball up to Jonny House who span it out and was played through the backs into the hands of Fin who danced through three defenders and dotted down for a superb try. 0-41 Honiton
Louise Lane comes on for Matt Baily and soon after Charlie Wright scored Honiton’s last try of the match following one of his trademark breaks, fended of a defender or two and crossed the line for an excellent try. We really stubby now another superb run by Charlie Wright sees him with an easy run in to cross the line and puts us 0-46 up.
With 65 minutes played with the referee and captains agreement the referee blows the full time whistle.
Full Time 0-46 Honiton
A fantastic performance by Honiton who dominated this game from start to finish
Bad luck to Topsham who kept trying until the end. Hopefully all their injured players will make a speedy recovery.
