96 point thriller under the lights!
By Paddy O’Doors
History was made on Wednesday night when fortress Allhallows hosted its first ever floodlit game.
A capacity crowd had gathered no doubt eager for their “I was there” moment as Honiton 2s took on the Devon County Deaf team. The world’s media had arrived with sky even moving kick off forward by 5 minutes and Jeremy Rice, currently enjoying a last minute bargain break at the Travelodge in Tehran was still able to tune in!
From the start the County side showed their attacking strength and raced into a 10 point lead with two early tries.
Honiton struck back when after good work from the forwards, wrecking ball Tom White was able to crash over.
Honiton then took the lead when Finn Parratt bulldozed his way over under the posts and Eiran Enticott added the conversion.
Rhys Phillips then showed good pace to make a break up the touchline for Honiton’s third try which Enticott converted for a 19-10 lead.
With half time approaching, the visitors hit back with their third try to head to the half time oranges with the score at 19-15.
Playing down the Allhallows slope in the second half, Honiton made an early breakthrough when Phillips crossed for his second of the night.
A try for Finn Lowman which Enticott converted made it 31-15 but any thoughts that the contest was over were short lived as the Devon side replied with a converted try shortly after.
Ben West then scored to make it 36-22 but again the visitors hit back with their fifth of the night to make the score 36-27.
West added his second try which Enticott converted and when Joe Douglas raced over for a try, Enticott added the extras to bring up the 50 points for the ton!
23 points clear and only 14 minutes to go, surely it’s in the bag thought sections of the crowd!
The regular faithful know it’s rarely that easy and Devon hit back with two more tries to make it 50-41 with 5 to play.
As the clock ticked down the visitors struck again with an unconverted try making it 50-46 before the final whistle sounded.
