Evening all and woz on ….
Tariffs is woz on !! The disrespectful Orange Clown has just started a world trade war… just great! Could rant on and on but what’s the point and I’ve been told to just let it go as I can’t do anything about it.
Anyway rugby… last Saturday part one of the “must win games” was achieved with flying colours as we beat Sarries by 7 points to 45. Great to see half of Honiton down there and mightily impressed by those who made a day of it and went down by train and had a beer or two. It was an away game but I think we outnumbered their support by a long way.
We came firing out of the blocks and scored two quick tries and then a 3rd and 4th by the 30 minute mark which secured the bonus point and by half time the game was more or less over as we were 0-26 up. The home side rallied and despite two yellow cards against us we still piled on the points and we ran out comfortable winners scoring 9 tries to just one in reply. Once again we scored some really good entertaining tries and we retained the Paddy Thompson cup.
So… as I say, part one done. One more league game left which is this weekend and it’s a home game against Devonport Services who we just over took to go into second place, courtesy of the Sarries win last weekend. We now have 84 points, they have 83. So it’s simple, whoever wins gets the second place slot and then has to wait and see if that coming second, means they get promoted. This uncertainty is because it depends on who comes down from all the leagues above (It’s complicated if honest, Churchie will know. )
Now, some things to consider… and some back ground info needed for this weekend’s game ….Devonport’s senior side, who went up to National league two last season have unfortunately not done that well at that level and have already been relegated straight back down to the SW divisions. They do have their last league game on Saturday but the question is… will they put out their strongest team for that “no point” game or load up their 2nd team to ensure they win a possible promotion for their twos. There are rules to try and stop this sort of thing happening but it’s hard to police. I guess we just have to beat what’s put in front of us.
To help us do this, I’d like to ask if you could all show up on Saturday and all be a tad partisan with your support for the Ton, I’m sure it will help greatly . Our long serving Chum Giles Bamberger is also doing his bit by organising his annual sponsor lunch before the game and this year he has done an amazing job and has managed to persuade several local companies to sponsor the day all so we can raise money for both the club and Doddie Weir’s charity “My Name’s Doddie” which I know is dear to his heart. He’s renowned for asking people for fines money on the day so don’t be offended if he does it to you, it’s all for a good cause. Apparently all his guests will all be dressed as Morris Dancers and whilst having no idea of how to actually Morris Dance I’m assured there is a prize for the best dance performed on the day .I also have it on authority that the Sun is going to be out and there are two games to watch as our twos entertain Bideford as well.
I must confess I barely watched the Chiefs game at the weekend as frankly I’ve lost a bit of interest in them, I’m sorry to say… now… if there was relegation at stake I’d be paying a lot more attention…I’m sure several of you feel the same about this it’s just lost its edge.
Ok, as you know there was no Junior games last weekend as it Mothering Sunday so all back on this weekend. Home against Exeter Athletic we have the 10’s ,12’s and the 14’s play Paignton. Away at Athletic are the 7’s 9’s 11’s and the 13’s. Jame Vince the fixtures sec is trying to get a game for the 15’s as we speak, so that’s a watch this space one.
That’s it for this week hopefully I will report on a win next week and I’ll let you know about other stuff and the cup games we have left.
